A little more Crewel Work

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for your lovely comments on my previous post. They are much appreciated!

I hope those taking part in Halloween celebrations had a great weekend, and visited some of the many blogs displaying Halloween creations.

**********

DH and I were walking last week when we saw this spooky cat! He's a little small - just click on the photo to enlarge! He was very friendly, and I was worried he was going to follow us home. He didn't though, we out-walked him!

Spooky cat
Strange how their eyes look in the dark, isn't it?

Crewel Work

Although I had previously embroidered with wool on my handicraft group's "fruit" project (seen here), it still feels quite odd.  I would be much happier stitching with Perlè threads.  However I will persevere and finish it!

I managed to find a little time for some stitching, and this is my Crewel Work to date!

Unfortunately the fabric is a little hazardous, as it seems to be something like sacking material, and when I'm doing the inevitable "frogging" dusty fibres are flying in the air - I inadvertently breathed some in before I realised what was happening. It wasn't very nice!

The weave of the fabric is hindering neat stitching, as one cannot push the needle in just where it is needed. To the left of the flower there is a flaw in the fabric, which wasn't visible when I started stitching - and I hope to be able to disguise it in some way - I need to add a smaller flower or leaf of some type to cover it.

I am linking to Super Mom - No Cape for her Vintage Stitchery Link Party - do pop over to see more stitching projects.  Today Susan has a free PDF of Vintage Workbasket Baby Embroidery Motifs.

Young Cattle
Youngsters!
On the return journey the same day we saw these cattle.  They are the same youngsters previously shown on my blog, who had been separated from their mothers.

I hope you will find time to say "Hi".  I usually answer comments on this page, and if you tick the box to receive follow up comments, my response will find its way to your email box! And I will be along to visit you too!

Have a great week!

Hugs!

The cattle look much happier (and I'm sure they sound much better too!). The kitty fits in with all that's Halloween this week (spooky eyes) and I'm with you in not liking stitching with wool thread. I much prefer floss or pearl cotton.

The wool will look lovely. Perlé might shine a little brightly..

Hi Mary Anne, thank you for looking in. Yes, the cattle are much quieter, and seem more settled. I am a little happier stitching this now, I'm beginning to enjoy the project more... if I stitch quickly I can carry on with my cross stitch! (Smiles!). Have a great week! xx

Thank you, Christine. The project is growing on me! As always, I do have others I want to start on, especially something for Christmas! Hope you have a lovely week too! xx

Hi Jeanette,

love the cat and the cattle. your crewel work is looking beautiful. you might try putting a thin cotton cloth behind the woven crewel cloth so that when it's in your hoop you will be stitching through both and you mind find that you can then put your needle where it's needed. i have done that in the past and it worked out well for me. just a suggestion.

Your crewel work looks great, shame about the flaw in the fabric but I'm sure you'll be able to disguise it somehow.

It looks lovely despite any flaws in the fabric.

I'm so impressed with your crewel work, Barbara. I want to give it a try, but why does time go by so quickly?

I have previously backed most of my embroideries with thin wadding, but with this fabric being something akin to hessian, and with some of the warps and wefts being different thicknesses, and probably because the fabric is a little heavy, I thought it wouldn't need backing. Yes, it could make the difference! Thank you for the suggestion, Deanna. xx

Thank you, Chris, and thanks for visiting! I'm still looking for something else to stitch over the flaw, but I'm sure something will come to me! xx

Thank you, Gillian. And thank you for dropping by! xx

Thank you Amalia, I know what you mean, every blog I visit someone is making some craft item I want to try, but there isn't time for everything! xx

Lovely start on your crewel embroidery....working round a flaw in the fabric can be hard, but the slubs in linen can also make the design look nicely rustic :)
Happy weekend.

oh yes, breathing in fibres is never good...neither is breathing in plaster dust, lol. Hopefully we finish with all that today.

I've never done any Crewel work. I can see how with the weave of that fabric unpicking could be an unpleasant task for sure. However, it does look likes it's going to be lovely once it's finished.

Thanks for linking up to last week's Stitchery Link Party and for linking back. Aloha hugs!

Roll on with the decorating! Such fun, isn't it? It will be worth the inconvenience when it's all finished! xx

Thank you Sue. It's been lovely seeing your stitchery and visiting all the other blogs seeing everyone else's stitching too.

Thank you so much for organising the party!
